The (third) Duke of Grafton, who was Chancellor of the University of Cambridge had about 1770 written a pamphlet (which Price said was "ascribed to a great name and would dignify any name ") on the subject of the Liturgy and the terms of subscription to the Anglican Articles. He did much to popularize Griesbach's famous edition of the Greek New Testament in England. In his retirement he wrote a defence of Unitarianism and an autobiography, first published in complete form in 1899. Among the other lay-divines of rank was Lord Shelburne, Burke's bugbear, who also favoured Unitarianism.
