See Ernst Weymar, Das Selbstverstandnis der Deutschen. Ein Bericht uber den Geist des Geschichtsunterrichts der hoheren Schulen im 19. Jahrhundert (Stuttgart, 1963), who brings out the responsibility that German educational tradition bears for the susceptibility of broad strata to National Socialism and richly documents his position. At this point the distinguished work of Hans Schwerte, Faust und das Faustische. Ein Kapitel deutscher Ideologie (Stuttgart, 1962), also deserves to be pointed out. In the appendix of that book a chapter is devoted to an analysis of the process of ideologization to which the picture by Durer, 'The Knight, Death, and the Devil', mentioned in the text was subjected.
